With a minute to go, Brainerd reached the Wayzata 18.
Brainerd Dispatch photographer Steve Kohls and “team photographer” John Erickson positioned themselves at the back of the Wayzata end zone, side by side.
WR Bronson Shepard sprinted toward the goal line, but curled as QB Nate Schaefbauer delivered the ball low. Shepard caught the ball and was simultaneously crushed by the Wayzata defender. Kohls and Erickson made virtually identical photographs of the play, including the familiar images of Coach Jeff Ramey leaping, and Coach Chet Stevenson not leaping, in the background.
Brainerd kicked off and, predictably, Wayzata attempted a pass. Inserted in a prevent defense, Shepard intercepted, sealing the victory for the Warriors.
Schaefbauer became one of 10 finalists for Minnesota’s best prep player of 2007 – along with Michael Floyd, Cretin-Derham Hall WR, who went on to star at Notre Dame and play in the NFL.
In 2008, Shepard began an All-Conference career at Concordia (Moorhead) and was elected captain in his senior year.
